Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about Tamil font conversion, Unicode, typing features and privacy.

General

What is Tamil Font Converter?

An online tool that converts Tamil text between Unicode and legacy Tamil fonts such as Bamini, TAB, TAM, Vanavil, Senthamil, SR-Tamil and Shree Lipi, in both directions.

Do I need to install software?

No. It works in any modern browser on computers and phones. You can optionally install it as an app from the browser menu or the Install app button.

Is it free?

Yes. Every converter is free to use with no sign-up and no limit on the number of conversions.

Unicode and legacy fonts

What is Unicode Tamil?

Unicode is the universal text standard. Each Tamil letter has one fixed code, so Unicode Tamil displays correctly on phones, browsers, Word, Google Docs and social media, and search engines can read it.

Why does my old Tamil document show English letters?

Legacy Tamil fonts store Tamil letters as English keys. If the exact font is not installed, the text shows Latin letters and symbols. Convert it to Unicode to make it readable everywhere.

Should I still use legacy fonts?

Use Unicode for anything digital. Legacy fonts are still useful for older DTP templates, print layouts and software that does not support Unicode Tamil well.

Conversion

Is the conversion always perfect?

Most text converts cleanly. Old files can contain mixed fonts, manual fixes or rare letters, so always proofread important documents, especially before printing.

My output looks wrong. What should I check?

The most common cause is the wrong source font or the wrong direction. Try a short sample with a few likely fonts, and use the swap button to check the direction.

Can I paste text from a PDF or Word file?

Yes, as long as it is real text. Scanned PDFs are images and need OCR first. Some PDFs also add hidden spaces that may need a quick cleanup.

Can I convert a file?

You can open a .txt file up to 2 MB with the file button or by dropping it on the input box. It is read in your browser and never uploaded. For Word files, copy the text and paste it.

Typing features

How does Thanglish typing work?

Turn on the Thanglish button and type Tamil words in English letters. When you press space, the word changes to Tamil script, for example amma becomes அம்மா. It uses Google input services, so it needs internet.

Which browsers support voice typing?

Chrome, Edge, Safari and most Android browsers. The mic button stays hidden in browsers that do not support it, such as Firefox.

Privacy and support

Do you store my text?

No. Text stays in your browser. The last text you typed is kept only in your own browser storage so it is still there when you return. The Clear button removes it.

Does it work offline?

Yes. After you open a converter once, the page and its font map are saved on your device and keep working without internet.

How do I report a problem or request a font?

Use the contact page. Include the font name, the direction and a short sample of the text.
