How to use Tamil Font Converter

Five short steps for converting Tamil text in either direction, plus fixes for the most common problems.

  1. Open the right converter. Start on the home page and pick a font from the menu, or open the page for your font pair, such as Bamini to Unicode.
  2. Check the direction. The left box is the text you have and the right box is the result. Press the round swap button to switch between Unicode to legacy and legacy to Unicode.
  3. Add your text. Paste text, type it, type in Thanglish, speak with the mic button, or open a .txt file. Legacy font text may look like English letters before conversion. That is normal.
  4. Review the result. The result updates as you type. Check names, joined letters, numbers and punctuation, especially for official or print work.
  5. Use the output. Press Copy, Download, Share or Print. Paste Unicode text anywhere. For legacy output, paste it into your design software and apply the same font.

The result depends on choosing the font the text was really typed in. If the output looks wrong, try a short sample with another likely font.

When to use Unicode output

Use Unicode for websites, blogs, Word and Google Docs, email, WhatsApp, Facebook, forms and anything you want people to find in search. It works on every modern device without extra fonts.

When to use legacy font output

Use legacy output for older print templates, DTP layouts in PageMaker or CorelDRAW, and software that only supports a specific Tamil font. After pasting, apply that font to the text.

Typing tools

  • Thanglish: type vanakkam and press space to get வணக்கம். Turn it off with the keyboard button if you want to type English.
  • Voice: press the mic, allow microphone access, and speak Tamil. Press it again to stop.
  • Files: open or drop a .txt file up to 2 MB. Old ANSI and UTF-16 files are detected automatically.

Common problems

  • Output looks like random letters: the source font is probably different. Try Bamini, SR-Tamil, Senthamil, TAM or Vanavil.
  • Only some letters are wrong: the file may mix fonts, or contain rare letters. Fix them by hand and report a sample to us.
  • Legacy output shows English letters in Word: select the legacy font for that text.
  • Text from scanned PDFs cannot be converted: run OCR first to get real text.
